Usually, the program may requires at least a bachelor's degree in engineering, although master's and doctorate level programs are commonly sought once the bachelor's degree is obtained. Engineers may need to perform a variety of tasks on the job, including things like developing new products or solutions to problems, evaluating designs for various products, as well as testing, production, and maintenance. Computers and math are a large part of any engineering position, so competency in these areas is a must. There are 17 different engineering specialties and each one has different duties, qualifications, salary, and expected growth for the future. Aerospace engineers and petroleum engineers earn the most, while lower earning positions include civil engineers and health and safety engineers. The projected growth for most of these careers is significantly high, although some will see little to no change over the course of the next decade. Those who work in the more desirable areas of engineering may find the job opportunities and highest paid positions. Engineers are required to be licensed in all 50 states and D.C. when they work directly with the public in their daily career.
